Valholl has been completely re-furbished and re-powered with a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system with twin electric motors fed by an efficient modern John Deere generator.

Valholl is the old Norse spelling of Valhalla – the Viking version of heaven. Stepping aboard Valholl feels like heaven indeed – combining a much-beloved classic mid-century charm with modern technology and comfort. Valholl offers all you may need, wherever you may go.

Valholl is hull #17, Art DeFever design with heavy, durable mahogany planking and yakal frames, a tough tropical hardwood. She has been well-maintained, fully refurbished, and upgraded with modern electrical and plumbing systems as well new electronics and a diesel-electric propulsion system. Valholl is built and set up for coastal cruising with all the necessary creature comforts and systems for efficient long-range cruising. With great seakeeping capabilities, Valholl has traveled from Alaska to Mexico.

The classic American Marine Alaska Trawler’s extensive refit was meticulously performed and documented. This becomes evident as you browse through the detailed specs and photos provided here – see for yourself and you will begin to appreciate the intelligent engineering, with thoughtful attention to every detail that is apparent when you board the vessel.

Entering the salon from the aft deck - the first thing you notice is how extraordinarily clean, bright, and modern the interior is – and except for tastefully retained classic Alaskan Trawler elements, it is mostly new. The spacious salon and connected galley beckon you to linger – but the bridge commands attention right away. The modern technology that sounded overwhelming is, in reality, quite simple to operate. With cameras and split screens to monitoring anything in need of attention – it is easy to feel fully in command of the vessel from the helm station.

For accommodations, Valholl offers a forward king berth stateroom with storage, head, pilothouse day berth, and salon sofa pulls-out into queen berth. The original guest cabin has been modified into a workshop – the organization and use of this space rival what few have at home. The workshop is could be easily modified - temporarily or permanently - back into an additional cabin with two bunks.

Truly a one-of-a-kind trawler, Valholl is a comfortable live aboard for any couple with beautifully handcrafted teak interiors, smartly designed living areas, and exceptional storage.

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM

Valholl was originally equipped with twin Lehman-Ford 6cyl. diesel engines that had reached their end of service life. Rather than repowering with standard diesels, the owners decided to go with a more efficient and environmentally friendly propulsion system. The new system is basically an electric powered boat with a modern, clean-running Tier-3 diesel generator feeding twin electric propulsion motors. With this system, the single diesel generator runs at a constant RPM in its peak efficiency band and the two electric motors provide variable speed power to the twin, aggressively pitched 4-blade propellers. The transmissions have been eliminated with a simple belt reduction between the motors and the prop shafts.

The twin electric motors produce 88HP each with full torque at very low RPM. The motors are feed by a 144 volt DC battery consisting of three 48 volt battery banks in series. There are 24 AGM 6 volt 224AH batteries that make up this battery system (new 2020). Valholl will run at around 5 knots for approximately an hour on battery power alone. For longer and faster journeys, the diesel generator is used to feed the battery bank and therefore the twin electric motors. With the generator running, Valholl will comfortably travel at 6 to 7 knots burning around 3-3.5 GPH of diesel. The generator will simultaneously provide 120v AC power to the shore powered systems while underway (air conditioning, washer/dryer, water heater, etc.)

Operation of the system is fairly straightforward and similar to traditional drive systems. There is an ignition key switch for each of the two propulsion motors and one for the diesel generator. The propulsion motors are controlled via standard combo throttle/transmission levers at the helm. The engine room has an automatic blower system to keep cooling air flowing through the space while underway. This system is thermostatically controlled and activated with the ignition switch. The diesel generator is traditionally water cooled with a raw water through-hull, strainer, and engine-mounted heat exchanger.

Full system monitoring is provided at the helm. The diesel generator provides complete NMEA2000 instrumentation via the helm mounted Raymarine multifunction displays, including load%, fuel burn rate, coolant temp, and MPG efficiency. There is also a 6” Raymarine display in the engine room as a repeater for this information. This data allows the operator the ability to fine-tune the vessel speed for optimal efficiency depending on current conditions. The electric propulsion motors each have their own dedicated 2” round instrument providing RPM, current draw as well as motor controller temperatures. Additionally, there is a 2” round instrument providing propulsion battery bank voltage and current draw.

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF A POTENTIAL SOLAR INSTALLATION

A potential future upgrade would be to add photovoltaic solar panels to the salon cabin deck. There is currently room for approximately 2-2.5KW of solar panels. These panels could feed the propulsion battery bank to extend the run time on battery power alone or reduce the load and therefore fuel consumption of the diesel generator.
