DOWN HOME is a completely refit and rebuilt classic boat ready to take you wherever you want to go. It has modern electronics, updated equipment, efficient systems, strong motor, and a custom doghouse to protect you from weather. It sails beautifully, is well balanced, with only 4’6” draft in its modified full keel. It is a simple boat to sail for just a couple or single handed. For quite a few years Down Hown has sailed from the Canadian Maritimes to the southern Bahamas and everywhere in between many times.

PEDIGREE: Of the 19 Dickerson 41 hulls made, 10 are still long distance cruising, which is testimony to its desirability. Made by the famed Dickerson Boatbuilders yard, in Trappe, MD, it is a very strong, stable, and smooth motioned boat. It is made of a fiberglass hull, encapsulated lead keel, and a fiber-glassed over wood deck. The Dickerson Owners Association has been very strong for 60 years and you will have dozens of new best friends. The June Rendezvous is a must attend event.

Accommodations

MAIN CABIN: Bulkheads are ash, lighter than normal, with lots of teak trim. Custom cabinets have been fitted on the starboard side. A 28” LED TV with a custom sound bar is on the port side. A teak table dinette and blue leather cushions adorn the main cabin. Two ocean sea berths with lee cloths can be fitted in the main cabin, but are not visible until needed. Hidden sliding screens are fitted to each companionway and hatches have folding screens for easy deployment.

OWNERS CABIN: The owners cabin was reconfigured into a queen sized double berth. Multiple lockers adorn the sides. The berth is hinged to lift and allow access to additional storage and steering quadrant area. A custom mizzen mast base allows for more movement in the aft cabin then the original set up. It has 2 hanging lockers, 8 drawers, and 6 large lockers.

A Force10 propane stove and oven. 9 drawers and 5 cabinets are directly in the galley area, with others nearby. Counters are corian with a single deep inset sink, for usage while underway. Multiple spice racks adorn a wall. A large freezer/refrigeration system is well insulated, with refrigeration having top and side access. Compressor and electronics were replaced in 2020, and evaporator in 2021. A separate pull out trash container is fitted in. A Xintex electric solenoid propane shut off valve is fitted.

Two 150G tanks, 300G total, under the cabin floor boards lined with strong inserts, provide potable water. An electric pump provides water to the galley and head area, with a shower. An 8G water heater is utilized, providing hot water from AC current or motor usage. Water from the main tanks are potable, however a Seagull IV filter through a separate fawcett is used for added enjoyment. All water lines are rebuilt using PEX tubing with quick disconnect fittings. Foot pump fresh water is plumbed in but foot pumps are not hooked up. A 45G holding tank is fitted under the Vee berth.

Electrical

The entire boat has been rewired with new DC and AC panels. The AC panel is flexible, accepting one 30A, two 30A, or one 50A input cable. An inverter can be utilized for off the grid short term AC usage. A 16,000btu heat/ac unit is fitted under the port side settee while plugged into shore power.

The house bank utilizes four 8L16 - 6V industrial batteries, configured to provide 740AH at 12V. They are positioned just above the keel under the floorboards. A separate 12V starting battery is utilized for the motor. LED lights are fitted just about everywhere.

A Xantrex 40A battery charger is used while under AC power. A Balmar 110A alternator with separate Balmar 614 regulator, is used while under motor. 350W of rigid solar panels led through an MPPT controller and a Rutland 1200 wind charger led through a separate MPPT controller charge while at anchor. A Link 2000 keeps the owner informed in all aspects of battery charging and usage. A Balmar DUOcharge is utilized to keep the starting battery constantly charged.

Sails & Rigging

Main and mizzen are set for easy deployment and reefing from the cockpit. They are on Tides system teflon luff groves for easy up and dousings. Halyard lines are set for quick sail takedowns by just releasing to instantly relieve problems, already set in their stack pack covers. The sails were new in 2017. A 140% genoa was new in 2016. A 100% ocean sail is new in 2021. All sails are from Chesapeake Sailmakers in Annapolis, except for the 140% genoa. Two bronze Lewmar 52ST two speed winches make for easy headsail control. One bronze Lewmar 40ST two speed for main halyard controls, easily electrified if wanted. Chainplates were replaced in 2020.

MASTS: Masts were removed, refashioned, and repainted in 2015. All new wiring, new LED lights (including mast top navigation and deck lights), sail controls, halyards, a Shakespere TV antenna, BG 4G color radar dome, Tri lens radar detector, AIS antenna, BadBoy wifi antenna, VHF antenna, and the Rutland whisper quiet wind charger were installed. Retractable mast steps were installed on both masts.

Mechanical

The Yanmar 4jh2te, 63hp turbo has 3400 hours. It is very strong, reliable, and well maintained. A feathering 3 blade Kiwi Prop drives through the water. The starboard fuel tank was replaced and the portside tank in 2016. Electronic fuel gauges are displayed. A Racor500 cleans and filters the diesel. A custom external bronze cutlass bearing housing is fitted.

ANCHOR AND GROUND TACKLE: On the bowsprit roller, a Rochna 55lb anchor fits snugly. It is deployed by a Maxwell windlass attached to 200’ of ⅜” HT chain provides plenty of strength. A custom leader line with rubber snuggy leads from the waterline stem fitting. A washdown pump provides seawater to clean muck from the anchor before it goes into the chain locker. A very large Danforth is stored in the cockpit locker with 150’ of ⅞” braided line for secondary anchoring times.

Electronics

Down Home has a full suite of BG electronics including a Zeus3 9” chartplotter to control all functions, with Navionics charts for both North and South America. Wind direction and speed, depth, boat speed through water are monitored through two displays mounted overhead in the cockpit. Included are a BG VHF with integral AIS send/receive function with separate wireless cockpit microphone, a Fusion radio w/CD player, 2 main cabin and 2 cockpit speakers. A BG rate compass provides exact bearing calculations. A very strong hydraulic/electric autopilot, controlled by a BG computer becomes your personal helmsman, when needed.

Deck

The deck was stripped, reinforced, and refinished in 2015. Cabin sides were replaced with Coosa and new bronze ports from New Found Metals were installed. Three new Lewmar Ocean hatches were installed overhead. Kiwigrip provides a great non-skid surface. Two bronze dorade vents help ventilate below. Toe Rails were replaced with larger teak boards in 2021. Teak cockpit coamings were refurbished in 2021. A new custom split aft stern rail was replaced in 2018. Strong dinghy davits were added. A propane locker is affixed aft housing two 20lb aluminum tanks. A lazarette lies across the stern below deck. The hull was repainted in 2020.

DOGHOUSE : the doghouse was added in 2015, made with Coosa and strong never rot material. It has canvas sides, completely enclosing the cockpit, which changed the usage of the boat while sailing and at anchor. Being removed from the weather elements makes it easier. A very large front window opens to provide plenty of ventilation. It is walkable on top and also houses the two fixed solar panels. Water collection drains help in securing rain while in tropical areas. Our foul weather gear is now only used when going ashore.

Dinghy and outboard

A Portabote is fitted to the dinghy davits for excursions off the boat. A customized fold down platform off the stern makes for an easy way to get in and exit the dinghy. A fixed swim ladder can also be fitted. The Portabote can be folded and carried on the deck in custom deck brackets if desired, but in most cases is not necessary, even for offshore voyaging. An almost new Lehr 5hp propane motor is carried on the stern rail when not in use. A block and tackle can lift the motor down to the dinghy stern easily. The two together make for a very desirable combination. Clean and efficient.
