Jack Henriques was in his 20s when he came to America, bringing four generations of boat building knowledge with him from his native Portugal. Some 30 years later, the Henriques name is synonymous with rugged, no-nonsense fishing boats, all built at the family-run factory on the New Jersey coast. The first Henriques model was the 35 Maine Coaster, which debuted in 1977. The Henriques 38 was introduced in 1988 and remains in production.
Gazing at this yacht as I approached the dock I could tell this is a Pride of Ownership vessel. The hull, decks and sides of this yacht are shinny as the sun bounced off every surface. Newly waxed, and it shows! The eisenglass immediately caught my attention; it must be new, as it was clear and shinny. Even the cockpit was clean as could be, not a speck of dirt anywhere.
The Henriques 38 Flybridge has an upright profile, with the high sides and moderately flared bow of an offshore fishing boat. The cabin and flybridge are positioned over the center of the boat, giving the profile a pleasing visual balance that enhances the boat's solid, conservative character.
The focus of the boat for most buyers is the 140-square-foot cockpit with its two 100-gallon in-deck fish boxes and standard tackle center forward. There's plenty of room to work and land a large fish using the standard tuna door. This yacht comes with a beautiful mahogany fighting chair with footrest which is covered for protection. There is plenty of storage everywhere in the cockpit. The leaning bolsters are bright white and in excellent condition. Centered in the transom is a huge live bait well...at least 30 gallons. Forward next to the salon entrance is a cutting board, cooler and more storage.
Entering the salon you can't help but notice the great condition of the interior. What year is this yacht The carpeting has snap down mats which have kept the carpets immaculate. The sofa cushions as well as the dinette cushions are all in like-new condition. As a matter of fact the entire boat interior is like-new. To starboard is a sofa and opposite is a TV and entertainment center. You are reminded that this is one serious fishing boat when you see overhead in the salon are rod holders for 20 poles!
Stepping down to port is a dinette that has been made into a double bed. It has 4 storage doors on the wall for storage of table items and condiments. To starboard is the galley with full sized refrigerator/freezer, microwave, coffeemaker, two burner stove and sink. This galley has a ton of storage unlike other yachts this size. There are 5 drawers, 5 cabinet doors and 2 overhead doors for plenty of storage in the galley for groceries, pots and pans. There are corian counter tops with an integrated sink for ease of maintenance.
The owner lifted up the steps for shots of the clean engine compartment. He remarked that a trip out to the canyon and back he can do on $400 of fuel, that the engines are economical to run. The boat handles very well in rough seas and in 6' seas it just plows through the waves with ease.
The master stateroom is forward and like the galley has tons of storage and hanging locker. I believe I counted 15 cabinet doors! To starboard is the spacious head and stand up shower which was as clean as could be. The entire yacht is fresh smelling and white glove clean!
Back up top side we head to the bridge. All of the cushions; bench, and two chairs are in excellent condition. The two wooden captains chairs are in great shape. Forward on the bridge is the full bench seat running in front of the console and 3 large storage compartments for things like lifejackets. Looking through the clear eisenglass I spot a new life raft on the bow. At the console is a large display of electronics as listed:
- 2 -- GPS's.
- 2 -- VHF's.
- Auto Pilot.
- Engine Synchronizer.
- Satellite weather system by Sirius.
- -Pioneer Stereo - Sirius Radio.
Overhead are two ceiling mounted spools for controlling the outriggers. The eisenglass full bridge enclosure is all new in 2014, and it shows!
