"Whirlwind" 45' William Garden Custom. This yacht is an excellent example of the famous West Coast yacht designer's custom yawl. Ideal for off-shore, or coastal cruising. Built in the Chapman-Kalayjian yard of Costa Mesa in 1956. Originally commissioned as a one design by Stu Babcock of Dana Point, California.
WHIRLWIND was cold molded in western red cedar, two layers at 45 degree angle, using plastic staples. The chain plates have been replaced with new, the masts and booms have been refinished, and 40 ribs have been laminated in using quarter inch marine ply. The work is excellent. There was rot in the deadwood at the prop shaft. That wood has been replaced; however the shaft opening has not yet been bored.
The work remaining on the boat is principally cosmetic. The hull has been faired with long boards, and needs but a couple of other passes to complete the work. There is a a full complement of sails, cushions etc. The water and fuel tanks have been removed of course, but all are intact. There was a leak in one of the fuel tanks that remains to be repaired.
This is a one of a kind classic yawl designed by the world famous William Garden. Her restoration and cold molding was performed to the highest standards and she is ready for her next owner to steward her through the remaining work. This double ended yawl will turn heads everywhere she sails! The center cockpit and aft cabin offer private accommodations, and her narrow beam and double ended design afford exciting sailing characteristics and elegant esthetics.
